Girls' Traveling Softball FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is included in the registration fee?
A: The Hudson Boosters provide each player with a complete uniform (jersey, pants, belt, and socks). Each team is supplied with 2 sets of catcher’s equipment, practice softballs, game softballs, whiffle balls, batting tees, and first aid kits. Also included are association fees, field grooming and maintenance costs, umpire costs (if not part of the association fee), and a budget for tournaments. There are no administrative costs in our programs, the Hudson Booster programs are run entirely by volunteers.

Q: How does the Hudson Booster fee compare with other associations?
A: The Hudson Booster program fee is one of, if not the lowest of comparable associations with which we compete, and does not cover all of the costs of the Traveling program. We can keep the fee structure low because the program is subsidized by the funds collected at the Hudson Booster Days Celebration over the 4th of July. For this reason, we encourage you to attend the celebration.

Q: Are there any work expectations for parents of players on Traveling teams?
A: Yes, please see the Volunteer page for details.

Q: How many games will a Traveling team play during the season?
A: 10-U teams play a 16 game league schedule plus an end of year tournament. Teams 12-U yrs old and above will play a 18 game schedule with an end of year tournament. The total number of games played in a season depends on how many tournaments and tournament games a team plays. Some teams may play up to 50 games per season.

Q: Who can participate in the Hudson Booster Girls Traveling Program?
A: Girls meeting the age and residency requirements wishing to participate in the Traveling program will be given the opportunity to try out. Players must not be a member of another softball program whose participation would conflict with the Hudson Booster program.

Q: What are the Traveling program’s residency requirements?
A: Children who go to school within the Hudson School District or Children who live in the Hudson School District or Children who have a parent or guardian residing in the Hudson School District meet the residency requirements.

Q: Are there any exceptions to the residency requirements?
A: Yes. If it is necessary to fill-out a roster for a team without enough Hudson participants, players from other communities may participate in one of our programs as long as it does not force a Hudson player off of a team.

Q: What are the Traveling program’s age requirements?
A: The age of a player in the Traveling programs is determined by the rules and regulations of the association administrating the Traveling league in conjunction with the Baseball/Softball Committee. (See the Age/Program chart in the “Registration” tab.)

Q: Who places players on the teams?
A: The Girls Traveling Softball Player Selection Committee is responsible for placing players on a team. This committee consists of knowledgeable softball people, none of whom shall have a child that is trying out for the team being selected. This committee will ensure that the selection process follows Hudson Booster guidelines.

Q: What process is used to place players on a team?
A: Players are evaluated in a try-out process using an evaluation form that has been approved by the Girls Traveling Player Selection Committee. No parent may participate in any aspect of the tryout when their child is being evaluated. The Players Selection committee reviews all data and selects up to 10 players to a team. The coach assigned to that team can then chose additional players from those remaining to fill out the team’s roster. Those additional players must be approved by the Player Selection Committee. Generally, 11 – 13 players are selected to a team.

Q: What skills are evaluated at the tryout?
A: Infield, Outfield, Hitting in a cage off of a pitching machine, Bunting, Throwing (as an aspect of both infield and outfield) and Foot Speed. Pitching and Catching are also recorded, but are not part of the players total evaluation score.

Q: Can a player try out for a team older than her age?
Yes, a player may try out and play for the age directly above their actual age if all of the following conditions are met: At least 15 players must be participating in the tryout for the older age group; the younger player scores in the top 5% of their current age group; the younger player participates in her current age group's try-out and the player selection committee agrees that moving the player up would be in the best interest of the program.

Q: How are coaches selected?
A: All candidates for coaching go through an evaluation interview conducted by the Girls Traveling Coach Selection Committee. No person may serve on the Coach Selection Committee if that person (or spouse) is a Traveling team applicant for that age group. After all candidates are interviewed, the Coach Selection Committee selects a head coach for each team. Assistant coaches are selected by the head coach. All coaches must go through a background check.

Q: What happens if my daughter does not make a Traveling team?
A: The Hudson Boosters will give players the opportunity of playing in our In House program. This would include tournament teams if offered for that league.
